IIIT-Bangalore is a new generation Graduate School focusing on all aspects of information technology. Started in September 1999, IIIT-Bangalore has the status of a University (conferred under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956), and is promoted by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry. IIIT-Bangalore attracts high quality students from all over India into its acclaimed M.Tech., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs. Along with faculty, they pursue education and research in a unique campus in Electronics City -- the hotbed of IT action in Bangalore. The 879 alumni occupy key positions in more than sixty corporations. IIIT-Bangalore is managed by a Governing Body with Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys, as Chairman.
The Institute is involved in a diverse range of activities that are consistent with its mission, and contribute to society as well as the professional growth of its students and faculty. Some of these are:

  • Academic programs leading to masters and doctoral degrees in Information Technology. More information about these programs is given later.
  • Collaborations with the IT industry on R&D projects of common interest. Industry participation happens on a constant basis by way of chair professorships, sponsorship of Ph.D. students, focused research labs at IIIT-B, and live projects.
  • Incubation of companies to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship in students.
  • Social policy issues arising in the development and use of information technology are addressed in research that covers various economic domains, the organization of IT industry clusters, and information access for the socially underprivileged. Research output is disseminated through a white paper series and case studies of IT usage. IIIT-B is also closely associated with the Government of Karnataka's Board for IT Education Standards (BITES) that establishes academic benchmarks for undergraduate IT education in the state.
Currently the institute offers THREE degree programs.

The Institute is a graduate school, and offers no undergraduate degree programs.
The graduate study programs offered lead to the Master of Technology (M.Tech.), the Master of Science (M.S.) by Research, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in information technology. These programs offer training that is comparable to the best anywhere, and cater to different needs.

The M.Tech degree is intended to provide training for students who wish to work in the IT industry as practitioners. It is awarded upon successful completion of a 4-semester broad-based academic program in IT, going beyond, but incorporating essential elements of, traditional computer science. Apart from imparting technical knowledge, the program teaches managerial and other cognate skills that are essential for a successful career in today's competitive IT industry. All students enrolled in the M.Tech program are residential, full-time students.

The M.S. by Research degree is intended for mature students who wish to learn and perform research in a supportive academic environment. It is awarded upon successful completion of a graduate-level research program, usually lasting four semesters. Beyond the satisfaction of a relatively small number of coursework requirements, the major focus of the program is on developing research skills, leading to the completion of a Master's thesis describing significant original results. Most M.S. by Research students are working professionals (some already working as research scientists in reputed organizations or government bodies), who are sponsored by their employers.

The Ph.D. is the terminal, research-oriented degree in the subject, intended to prepare students for research, teaching, and scholarly careers in academic settings or research laboratories. It connotes a superior comprehension of the field and a high aptitude for research, and is awarded upon completion of a program that takes from 3 to 5 years (there are no hard limits). Beyond the satisfaction of a relatively small number of coursework requirements, the major focus is on carrying out a significant body of original research and the writing and defense of a doctoral dissertation describing this work.
The uniqueness of the iiit-b curriculum is that it makes for a broad-based program going beyond traditional computer science, and enables students to function well in industry, while keeping the rigorous learning expected of a classical program.

M Tech Program

The first semester of the M.Tech. program consists entirely of required "core" courses. These teach the new student the common foundational elements required, such as

  • Advanced programming principles

  • Mathematical foundation

  • Algorithms

  • Databases

  • Networking

The second semester builds on this foundation with two more core courses,

  • Operating systems

  • Software engineering
However, it allows the student the freedom to choose two "elective" courses from several that are on offer.

The third semester sees the student taking only elective courses (some of which may include research and other individual or group projects supervised by a faculty member).

The final semester is designated for industry internship, or the writing and defense of a research thesis.

  • Ph.D. Program Admissions 2008

The International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B), invites applications from qualified candidates for admission to its Ph.D. program in Information Technology.

The Institute has close ties with the IT industry, and aims to be a nodal center for world-class research in different theoretical as well as applied areas of IT. The areas of research include: Algorithms, Communication Systems, High-Performance and Highly Available Systems, Wireless and Optical Networking, Software Architecture and Engineering, Distributed Computing, Mobile Computing, Database Theory and Management, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, Digital Signal Processing, Ad Hoc Networks, Web Information Retrieval, Information Theory, Information Security, and the Political Economy of Information Technology.

    Ph.D. at IIIT-B
The doctoral program involves required and elective coursework, passing of examinations testing the candidate's depth and breadth of understanding, and the writing and oral defense of a dissertation describing a significant body of original research. The duration of time required to earn the doctorate may be estimated as 3 to 5 years, depending on the topic chosen and the candidate.

    Who can Apply?
The usual minimum qualification required is a 1st class four-year degree in a technical discipline (i.e., a 1st class B.E., B.Tech, or equivalent), but people holding 1st class Master's degrees in the mathematical sciences (e.g. an M.Sc. in mathematics, physics, statistics, or electronics) may also apply. Ordinarily, applications from candidates holding Master's degrees in a technical discipline (i.e. an M.E., M.Tech, or equivalent) will be preferred, but candidates who possess just the minimum qualification but show great aptitude for research may be considered. Such candidates may sometimes also be advised to pursue the M.S. by Research first, prior to being accepted into the Ph.D. program.

For candidates applying to do research in the Political Economy of Information Technology, a 1st class Master's degree in social sciences (M.A. or equivalent in anthropology, business management, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology or related disciplines) is acceptable. Candidates with 1st class M.Phil. degrees are especially welcome to apply.

For candidates applying to do research in Technology in Education, the usual criteria under ``Who can Apply?’’ are usually applicable, but candidates with first-class Master’s degrees in Education and a sound academic background in science and mathematics may be considered. Candidates interested in research in Technology in Education may be considered for a Ph.D. fellowship sponsored by HP Labs India.

    International Applicants
International applicants who hold degrees from recognized universities abroad are eligible to apply provided they can demonstrate the research potential expected of successful applicants. International applicants will also have to rigorously comply with all relevant laws and governmental formalities concerning emigration and immigration. They are expected to fund their own travel, and may in some cases not be eligible for fellowships and scholarships.

    Admission Procedure
Admission to the Ph.D. program at IIIT-B will be on the basis of submitted records of prior academic work and other scholarships showing aptitude for research, letters of recommendation, and a personal interview.
